RECAP - Our First Best Of Austin's Deli Magazine Showcase, 8/23/13 @ Club DeVille

The showcase was held inside to escape the heat (and light for those with laser shows!). Our musical lineup included: Ray Prim, Space Crazies, Mighty Mountain, Awkward Robot and Sour Bridges. To finish the night out we had a Costume Couture show by Mardi Gras designer, Hazel Mahony. And that was just the inside stage...

Outside, on Club DeVille's mainstage, we had LED lit hula hooping. By the entrance sat one of our sponsors, Garbo's Lobster Truck ATX, which sold out long before the night was over. Texas Music Water was flowing freely all around and Circle C sponsored us with their delicious BLUR brew. A video is in the works from the live interview corner we set up to chat with every performer following their set. I'll be posting the final edit soon, so be sure to check back.

As for what's next- I'm planning another event for the new year showcasing female fronted bands. And of course after that, there's always SXSW. Email thedeliaustin@gmail.com to get involved. Advertising and sponsorship inquiries can be sent to that email as well. Thank you again to our sponsors: The Good Music Club, TRCOA, Garbo's Lobster Truck, Texas Music Water, Circle C, The Flier Fairy, Unabashed Productions, Club DeVille and last but not least, CourtPie Photography for the great images. See you next time! -Written by Charise Sowells

Interview with
 The Awkward Robot

- by Lucy Sherman

There isn’t anything “awkward” about The Awkward Robot, but their music is just as quirky as their name. These Austin indie poppers break out the banjo, uke, and old school synth sounds frequently in their lighthearted, danceable tracks.  We had the chance to ask frontman Jason Martins a few questions.

How did you all come together as a band?

Javier (guitars, synth, banjo) and I went to school together for recording at Full Sail in Florida. We had always talked about starting a band after school and we finally did here in Austin. Javier had jammed and made friends with David (drums) and Jason Magnuson (bass, guitar) before I got here.  Javier and I released the first EP ourselves and then David joined in to play drums for our first tour and we kept going from there, finally adding Jason Magnuson on Bass.

What’s the story behind your name?

Really our name comes from the artwork of our first EP. My sister had a verson of the drawing entitled "The Awkward Robot". we decided to acquire the name because it spoke to us. It means a lot of different things to me. I mainly like the irony of it.

Favorite Austin venue(s)?

Favorite venues in Austin would be the Mohawk, Frank, and we really dug the Beauty Bar, which is Holy Mountian now. We haven't gotten a chance to play at the new place, but hopefully we can soon.

What are some other bands you all like/have shared a bill with?

To list a few locals: Glasgow, Borrisokane, Glow in the Sun, Love Inks, Possessed by Paul James, Walker Lukens.

Any new projects coming up (recording, tour, video)?

We have been recording new material for a new record we will get done this year. Also we will be booking a summer/fall tour soon.
