Birds of Maya

Birds of Maya Opening for U.S. Girls at PhilaMOCA Feb. 15

If you want to get to the foundation of Philly’s current psych-garage rock music community, then you need to look no further than Birds of Maya. The eardrum-bursting experimental blues rock trio has been melting faces for years now, while spawning beloved nationally/internationally-recognized acts like Purling Hiss and Spacin’. Though performances from the hard-rockin’ crew may come few and far between lately (however, the good news is that they'll have a new album coming soon - nicee!), you’ll have the opportunity to catch the forefathers in action tonight at PhilaMOCA. Bird of Maya will be supporting former Philly resident and Deli fave U.S. Girls, a.k.a. Meghan Remy. The once lo-fi, solo songstress is returning with a more polished sound this time around backed by a full band, which is made up of her hubby Slim Twig, a.k.a. as Max Turnbull, and his band, who will also be performing a set of their own this evening. It’s going to be a great night of music in Philly. You’ll most likely find me bouncing back and forth between PhilaMOCA and Pissed Jeans’ release show at Underground Arts. I’m really happy that the venues are so close to each other (just the right amount of distance for a puff and a swig). PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $7 - $10 donation, All Ages (Video by Tiffany Yoon) - Q.D. Tran

Rediscovered Track: “Which Side Are You On?” - Birds of Maya

Check out a rediscovered track from Birds of Maya’s Vol. II called “Which Side Are You On?” that had been “sitting on a dusty shelf in a Kensington basement since its completion in 2006,” which they just shared via Testostertunes! The psych rock power trio will be playing a free show this Sunday upstairs at Kung Fu Necktie with Watery Love.

Birds of Maya, Chris Forsyth & Daniel Bachman Explore Music at Little Berlin Oct. 24

Jamtastic power trio Birds of Maya are coming together tonight to melt faces and make ears ring at Little Berlin. By now, you should know it’s always a treat and a lesson in music exploration when Mike Polizze (guitar), Jason Killinger (bass) and Ben Leaphart (drums) combine forces. You’ll also have the opportunity to grab their reissue of the soundtrack Ready to Howl (Agitated/Richie Records) on CD (ha…remember that format). Joining them this evening to provide introspective instrumentals will be experimental guitarist Chris Forsyth, who released his latest album Kenzo Deluxe (Northern Spy) this past summer, and psych-folk guitarist Daniel Bachman, who is currently on tour in support of his new record Seven Pines (Tompkins Square). Little Berlin, 2430 Coral St., 7pm, $5 - $7 donation, All Ages - Alexis V.

Free Download: “Ready to Howl” - Birds of Maya

Birds of Maya’s 2010 Ready to Howl is the soundtrack to a “feature-film of the same name about one dude’s struggles inside (and outside) of polite society.” It will be reissued on CD (which will contain the album’s three original tracks plus two bonus ones from the band’s 2010 Regulation 7” featuring Harmonica Dan) and will be available on September 18. You can take a listen to and download the soundtrack’s title song and opener below. Enjoy!
