Female-fronted bands are being celebrated tonight at The Lexington. Headliners HOTT MT will be joined by L.A. Girlfriend, Haunted Summer, as well as new artist to watch, Mean Dream. They recently released a two-song samplr on bandcamp. Mean Dream Samplr is drenched in lo-fi scuzz, 80s teenage ennui, and peppered with dreamy, listless vocals reminiscent of Chrissy Hynde. The opening song, "Swamp Thing," stutters and starts, yet maintains a hypnotic bass line that tethers you to their madness. At times the edges are so rough, you feel as though you've been dropped into the midst of a heroin haze. Miraculously, they seem to slide right back into the groove making you realize they never really lost their way in the first place. The band proves their true pop prowess with "Full of Holes." The lighter companion to the shadowy opener, this tune's driving beat never quits. Just as you get lost in the rhythm, they hit you with the lines, "you can get in and out of my bed," shoving you off the seesaw of indifference. Mean Dream perfectly combine elements of the silly, the spooky, and the twee, with the ever-so-seriousness of shoegaze for a delightfully visceral experience. Mystical duo Haunted Summer have been enchanting audiences each monday during this spook-filled month of October for their residency at The Echo. This coming Monday, to close out the whole shebang, The Deli LA will be presenting the night. Their residency is centered around the release of their EP, ‘Something in The Water.’ Playing songs off the EP as well as new tunes written during their recent honeymoon in Paris, John Seasons and Bridgette Eliza Moody, will be backed by a full band. Last week, they debuted the live version of a former B-side, “Ain’t One,” which is streaming below. It was a showstopper, featuring Moody’s light-as-air vocals soaring above the band’s signature psyched-out sound design experimentation. The line-up for the final week is stellar, featuring a Deli Mag favorite, Touché, who we reviewed earlier this year, alongside recent singees to Innovative Leisure whose music has mysteriously evaporated from the interweb, De Lux, as well as densely, spaced-out newcomers, Historian. Haunted Summer, the new project helmed by John Seasons and Bridgette Eliza Moody, both of whom spent countless years honing their craft in other local bands, is getting ready to explode. They have just released the video for "All Around," their follow up single to the hauntingly catchy, “1996.” This latest tune is equal parts dreamy mysticism and sweet simplicity, while staying true to the duo’s immensely captivating catchiness. But the video release for “All Around,” and subsequent EP release - ‘Something in The Water’ is set for release Sept. 10 with an Amoeba in-store performance - is just the tip of the iceberg for these local lovebirds. They have announced a slew of tour dates that include opening slots for The Polyphonic Spree, a mini tour with French artist Coeur de Pirate, and of course, their October Residency at The Echo. Bridgette Moody and John Seasons have come together to form a new project more joyous and free than their past incarnations. In anticipation of their soon to be released debut full length, Haunted Summer has released the single “1996”, which is rich with orchestral swells and a laid back, loungey groove. The B-side, “Ain’t One,” is equally as charming, but with a bit more rhythmic pep and rambling atmosphere. Their brand of dream pop feels timeless, with just the right amount of youthful nostalgia to woo your ears into submission. Moody’s smooth, light as air vocals captivate like a siren of the sea, while the arrangements are lush and seductive, but never pushy.
