Panoramic are sad boys who rock, as well as sad boys who also happen to be DIY4LYFErs. Respectively prolific and intimately tied to DIY scenes of Orange County and the Inland Empire, members Alex Vercnocke, Austin Jenkins, Jonathan Modell (The Human Machine, Tririlla Recordings), and Matt Sturgis (The Palisades, Hillary Chillton, Model Talk) are running out to the southwest from August 5th till August 11th with mathpop duo Talk, Tired Thanatoid, coinciding with the release of Panoramic's debut album Not Exactly. Recorded at hideout/traphouse/lovenest The Palisades, the quartet's first full-length sees an expansion beyond the pop punk roots of EP "Rule of Thirds". Polyrhythmic piano solos and tight harmonies combine with quintessential tropes of the post-teen years including walking away from love, addiction, lost friendships, and suburban malaise.

The album is being released on cassette (/25) and on CD via Pacific Nature Records: each cassette and CD will be scented with pine essential oil. See their tour kickoff/album release party at Beatnik Bandito tonight, and listen to the first track of the debut album, "Not Exactly", below.

The harmonics and bass loops of "Looking Glass Reprise" drowned out Sam Farzin's cries, and he relented. Christmas lights and butcher paper cutouts shuddered with each strum. The nondescript DIY space VLHS —cousin to recording house/makeshift venue The Palisades— has been a musical hub for Pomona and the greater Inland Empire for four years running. On Sunday night, over 40 warm bodies packed themselves inside the walls, resting on the half-pipe, offering bud and new friendships as the tremors of Media Jeweler rattled their skulls.

The atmosphere was loose, and it smelled like Red Forman's basement.

Earlier, Jack Connor of opening band hit me, Harold joked about his goatee before burning a hole in our stomachs faster than you can say Rafa's Tacos. DOCKS frontman Ranier Tinkelenberg broke a string, but still slayed the crowd with Jack's honeyblonde Tele. Winter Break (ex- Summer Vacation) let out the most luscious screams as Mark Chen and Aaron Kovac gazed into each other's eyes. And to top it off, Hillary Chillton spoiled us at the end of the night with a new song (as of now un-named), going overtime with closer "Sad Dad/Rad Dad".

While we were complaining about 50 degree weather in Los Angeles, Santa Ana's Media Jeweler reportedly spent the last few weeks in Arizona while also helping to raise money for a friend's stolen projector, which definitely made us feel like sloths. Sam Farzin (guitar) had this to say about the band's foray into the wilderness:

"After a winter's hibernation traveling between yurts along the floor of the Grand Canyon, we are four souls more aligned than ever before. We are excited to present our escapist song cycle in the flesh for the first time in almost two months."

The rock band (full stop) plays a DIY show with DOCKS, who are on the last stop of their EP Release Tour— their six-track album Misdirected comes out January 15th via Open Door (CDs) and Bad Break (cassette). The beginning of October is sign for shorter days, chillier nights, and pumpkin spiced everythings, but down here it's still hot as hell. And tonight it's only gonna get hotter, louder, and chiller: turn up and get sweaty in the walls of vintage equipment store and supporting venue Timewarp Records as two recent Deli features, Hillary Chillton and Crescendo, welcome San Francisco's summer-eyed Hot Flash Heat Wave. The Bay Area baes wrap up their West Coast tour this weekend, celebrating the release of the sunbathing Neapolitan LP with two back-to-back shows in Santa Monica and Fullerton (@ The Continental Room with BURGER RECORDS' well-done lineup).

The event moved venues from The Heart of Art Gallery, after an incident of vandalism in late August prompted the space to shut down. SFV's trillest emo-soul trio The Unending Thread unfortunately had to pull out as well — big ups to their guitarist/vocalist Cesar Alas, who co-organized the event! Hillary Chillton, or "Hill Chill" as it's affectionately inked, is a band that resides just east of Pomona in the quiet suburbs of Claremont. The five-piece rep the VLHS Warehouse in Pomona that, like DIY venues Bridgetown and The Smell, have never wavered to bring great local talent and ennervate youths to support the music community. As such, there's an opulence of hi-gain twinkle and garage dirt in Hillary Chillton's indie rock sound that balances pop sensibility without sacrificing that DIY aesthetic (their outputs are personally recorded and engineered). They're also really into Weezer and Modest Mouse — just don't harp them to cover "Float On" or "Pork and Beans".

Find them Friday at the stage of San Diego's AwesomeFest 9, or hang back and watch them at The Smell this Saturday with some local cats: the previously featured post-rock angels Young Lovers and garage punk Saiyans Dustin and The Explosions.
