Jake's CMJ Day 3: Malatese, Life Size Maps, Haybaby, Homeshake, LeRug, No One and the Somebodies

Day 3 ended up being my Brooklyn band day. Somehow I ended up seeing all the bands I see play all the time, which might not be in the spirit of CMJ but, whatever (fuck you by the way for criticizing me).  I did get to see a bunch of bands I had been meaning to see for a long time; I'll stop talking now lets just get on with it already. - Read Jake Saunders' report of Day 3 of the CMJ Music Marathon 2014.

Life Size Maps releases "This Same house" single + lands Pianos residency

There is a heroic nature to Mike McKeever’s musical project Life Size Maps. Following in the digital footprints marked out by Kurt Feldman’s Depreciation Guild and other NYC groups like Parts and Labor and Anamanaguchi, McKeever employs similar sound design concepts in personal ways. “This Same House,” the band’s latest single, shimmers with a celestial background pulse as cleanly defined vocals overlay forceful guitar washes and precise synthesizer hooks. Lyrically, the story is about trying to keep focused on what you really want to do, while the endless all night party swirls around you. A number of surprising changes masterfully embedded in this just over three minute songs shows songwriting sophistication and - dare we say it - prog rock leanings. Life Size Maps is currently doing a Wednesday night residency at Pianos, with their next shows on March 12, 19 and 26. - Dave Cromwell

Life Size Maps open for Oberhofer with Celestial Shore on 05.02 at Glasslands

Brooklyn’s Life Size Maps have a pretty huge slot to fill with their warbled noise pop— they’re on before Oberhofer and Celestial Shore at Glasslands this Thursday (5/2), so their airtight grooves had better stay that way. Mike McKeever’s deliberate vocal style and heavily effected, meandering guitar serve as fitting centerpieces for their proprietary brand of post-postmodern rock, and with a locked-in rhythm section there’s little to fault them on. With a name that came from a stoned friend’s musings and a sound that’s difficult to pin down to any one corner, this trio is destined for success—or at least to rock your face off at Glasslands. The band is currently in the studio finalizing their debut full length, in the meantime check out their recent video for single "Abstract Speed" below - Zack Kraimer
