Here with his newest enthralling avant-art single "Puppet" is Noah Kellman, performing under his moniker Nozart. Kellman, a "fantastical musical storyteller", weaves melodic tapestries out of digital soundscapes, extraterrestrial noise, and relentless electric beats. Kellman's education as a jazz musician plays into his compositions, which deliver modern orchestrations in a futuristic orchestral style.

We've featured Kellman as Nozart before on The Deli NYC. His song "Just Let It Go" is still in our Best Songs By Emerging NYC Artists playlists. "Puppet" follows the style of his previous work, complete with musical buzzes and synth arpeggios bubbling underneath haunting vocals. Born in Boston as the project of singer-songwriter Ella Joy Meir and guitarist and composer Asher Kurtz, Iris Lune is now a Brooklyn based quartet, and plays expansive, mellow pop with ambient influences and jazzy inclinations. In single 'Triplets' (video streaming below) the band utilizes atmospheric vocal samples and electric piano to create a fluid drone on which Ella's mellow vocals float adrift. Iris Lune will be performing at Rough Trade on December 11 with two other interesting and like-minded local acts: Arthur Moon and Nozart.

Ironically, more often than not the best way to create something fresh is by digging deep into the past. For quirky and charming orchestral pop artist/composer Nozart, this means smoothly blending classically inspired compositions with his own indie-pop vocals. To some this premise may seem gimmicky at first (after all, how many terrible classical music/rock hybrids have we experienced already?), but his music is convincing in its ambition and execution. His compositions, which include piano, brass, wind, and percussion, are intricate but also minimalist, and definitely steer clear of any pompousness. This is key because it allows Nozart's vocals enough space in each track to turn them into "songs" rather than orchestral pieces that happen to include vocals.  Nozart certainly has the potential to bridge the chasm between avant and mainstream with his uniquely catchy track "Just Let it Go."
