Garage rockers Sharkmuffin will release their latest EP “Gamma Gardening” on April 5th via Exploding In Sound Records. The five track's depict an outlandish sci-fi rock opera centered around a character named Serpentina who is pursued by The Atomic Gardening Society. EP opener “Receptionist” sets the sonic tone for the entire record with its loose, live-in-the-studio vibe. Overall, the songs are built around an angular bass-lines, a loose, busy hi-hat, chunky guitar chords and Tarra Thiessen's trademark caterwauling vocal style. “Designer Baby” drops down into a more sinister, echo-heavy tone breaking off into multiple tempos and b-movie-stylke outerspace effects. Current single “Serpentina” (streaming below) chugs along via Jordyn Blakely's syncopated percussion, pitch-bended guitar strokes and Natalie Kirch's rubbery bassline. “Too Many Knobs” is an over six minute raveup that sounds like Fun House-era Stooges. Final track “Fate” (their first single) brings things back to earth with a strolling, guitar-heavy love-tinged theme. NYC-based Sharkmuffin creates punchy garage rock wrapped in a fuzzy, '60s cool that is at once feminine and fearless. On the heels of a new album release, the band is about to celebrate the release of a split cassette with fellow NYC garage revivalists The Off White at Muchmore's on July 20th. Tarra Thiessen (guitar/vox) and Natalie Kirch (bass/vox) also gave our sister blog Delicious Audio an in-depth look into the meaning behind their latest tracks, and the delicious array of pedals they use to help create their frenetic tunes. Sharkmuffin is a band with a variety of sonic influences. They make high energy grunge tunes that pack a punch, but decorate them with psychedelic, 60s style guitar riffs reminiscent of beach pop classics like The Byrds or Jefferson Airplane. Despite their retro sensibilities, they manage to stay culturally relevant. Their latest music video for “Little Bird,” a cut off their upcoming sophomore effort, is an ironic narrative about the modern urbanite trying to make a way in the world. With huge crowds incessantly following their beloved Big Bird, there’s an underlying commentary on a generational tendency to hurry up and matter. Fresh from multiple appearances at the recently concluded CMJ fest, Brooklyn’s glam/grunge/garage rockers Sharkmuffin roll on with their personal take on the alternative rock sound. In addition to the myriad of rip-em-up exciting live appearances, the band continues to promote their recent full-length LP “Chartreuse.” That title track (streaming below) is a pure fun garage stomper, with lyrics detailing how they (someone) “Never want me around to hang loose;” the song sounds like a vintage rock and roll confusion scenario married to thumping bass and distorted guitar squalls. “First Date” moves in an even rawer, punkier direction, sounding like bratty girl-group fare with a touch of Siouxsie Sioux on her very first album “The Scream” (think “Carcass” or “Jigsaw Feeling”) in that shouty, aggressive vocal style. Sharkmuffin's next show will be at popular Brooklyn haunt Pallisades on 10/30. There's something quite enjoyable about most lo-fi videos that mix creepy and cheesy elements, but some songs work better than others with them. The video for 'Foul Play' by that force of nature that is NYC's Sharkmuffin is a fine example in this regard. The song alone, with its incendiary references to the psychedelic '60s, would make pretty much any moving image look like a hallucination, and the video simply exacerbates that effect to a point of no return. It was premiered by She Shreds, a magazine dedicated to women guitarist and bassists - Sharkmuffin will play the mag's party on June 5th at Shea Stadium.
