Rad Solo Acoustic Showcase at Cosmos Feb. 6

Cosmos, a new DIY show space in University City (Mantua), is hosting a rad solo acoustic showcase of front people from some of the local area music community's up-and-coming acts. You can catch Jake Ewald (of Modern Baseball/Slaughter Beach, Dog) and his humorous yet insightful signature wordplay and storytelling. Field Mouse's Rachel Browne (a.k.a. Anomie) will be there performing skeletal versions of her songs too, which will provide an interesting contrast to her usually lush, textural pieces. Evan Stephens Hall from melodious New Jersey lo-fi quartet, Pinegrove, will be in a uniquely intimate environment, exposing the heart of each tune. Also contributing to this special happening are Hodera’s Matthew Smith and Plainview’s Jeremy Smith. In all likelihood, this is not going to be your typical rowdy house show, well, maybe a few drunken sing-alongs. But one thing is certain; it will be a unique experience. Hopefully the night can offer you a new perspective on - or even new appreciation for - some very talented local songwriters/musicians. Cosmos, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7pm, $5, All Ages - Bryce Woodcock

Lame-O Records "Rock Residency" Feat. Lithuania, The Spirit of the Beehive & Slaughter Beach, Dog at Boot & Saddle Jan. 7

Tonight is the kickoff to this month's Lame-O Records's "Rock Residency" at Boot & Saddle. It's a stacked lineup where you'll find "hardcore friends" Eric Slick (Dr. Dog) and Dominic Angelella (DRGN KING), a.k.a. Lithuania, headlining the local indie label's showcase. The group's LP was The Deli Philly's September Record of the Month last year, and the duo also recruited drummer Ricardo Lagomasino (Many Arms, DRGN KING) to help fill out its grunge-meets-pop-rock sound. They'll be joined by The Spirit of the Beehive, which includes members of Glocca Morra and Kite Party. The shoegaze/grunge outfit has plans to release a new album later this year via Jade Tree. Popping the residency's cherry will be Slaughter Beach, Dog, the solo project from Modern Baseball's Jake Ewald. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $8, 21+ - Alexis V.

New Track: "JOBS" - Slaughter Beach, Dog

Slaughter Beach, Dog (Jake Ewald of Modern Baseball) has released a new track “JOBS.” The song continues a tradition of lyrical depth to explain life’s ongoing conundrums. The ponderous wordplay wraps around your head touching on employment, love, religion, etc. on the continuous existential journey. Though consciously contemplative, the single doesn’t retain an overly heavy feel, letting the lyrics stir without holding you down. (Photo by Jessica Flynn)

Free Download: "I Feel Extra-Natural" (LVL UP Cover) - Slaughter Beach, Dog

Slaughter Beach, Dog, a.k.a. Modern Baseball's Jake Ewald, has released a cover of LVL UP’s “I Feel Extra-Natural,” found on Hoodwink’d. The acoustic strumming pattern, subtle keys and softly interlaced vocals play into the song’s delicate, emotive nature. Tonight, Slaughter Beach, Dog will be performing at Hazel House on a bill presented by The Guild, which also includes Abi Reimold, Meridian, and Pinch Hitter. (Photo by Jessica Flynn)
