Nozart debuts live his fresh, orchestral sound - Mercury Lounge, July 8

Ironically, more often than not the best way to create something fresh is by digging deep into the past. For quirky and charming orchestral pop artist/composer Nozart, this means smoothly blending classically inspired compositions with his own indie-pop vocals. To some this premise may seem gimmicky at first (after all, how many terrible classical music/rock hybrids have we experienced already?), but his music is convincing in its ambition and execution. His compositions, which include piano, brass, wind, and percussion, are intricate but also minimalist, and definitely steer clear of any pompousness. This is key because it allows Nozart's vocals enough space in each track to turn them into "songs" rather than orchestral pieces that happen to include vocals.  Nozart certainly has the potential to bridge the chasm between avant and mainstream with his uniquely catchy track "Just Let it Go." Don't miss his debut live performance at Mercury Lounge on July 8. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber

PREMIERE: Focus! Focus! - "Desert Hearts"

*photo and video by Jess N Pierson

"Desert Hearts," the new track from Focus! Focus!, features soulful vocals from singer Elly Swope, laid atop a clean execution of slightly reverb-heavy, twangy guitars and straightforward drumming that make for an all around solid track.

The cleverly shot video for "Desert Hearts" was filmed as a live performance at Fuzzfolk Studios and even features a special appearance by the cutest little pup pup. It's part of a triad of videos being released by Focus! Focus! today, where they'll be having a video premiere show tonight at the Liquor Store.

Also playing the video release show tonight is rowdy performance art outfit KULULULU and experimental folk band Willow House.

Check out the video for "Desert Hearts" below, and be sure to watch the new videos also dropping today for "Angry Song" and "Secret Heart" before you head to the Liquor Store tonight!

Bent Knee release new album, 'Say So'

Bent Knee keeps going bigger and bolder with each project they release.  Never being afraid to blend genres before, on Say So the six-piece Boston band embarks on a sprawling musical journey that seems to hit every stop on the pop-avant garde spectrum. Not discrediting the band's impressively diverse instrumental arrangements, frontwoman and keyboardist Courtney Swain's cinematic vocals stand out as the sound's core. Whereas the instruments and sounds around her are constantly changing, Swain's voice provides an anchor that never lets the band's complex sound descend into unruly juxtaposition of elements. Bent Knee are about to go on a North American and European tour to promote 'Say So'. - Henry Solotaroff-Webber

PLUSH to Perform as King Woman´s Special Guest at Starline Social Club - 6/19

The Oakland based band, King Woman will be finishing out their current tour with Wax Idols in their home town at Starline Social Club on June 19th.

Miserable songwriter and all around underground goth goddess, Kristina Esfandiari has lead King Woman into an amazing career. With that said, the band has not left behind their local community behind as they invited special guest, the promising local underground independent band, PLUSH to perform for their upcoming show. It goes without saying this is going to be a local show that shouldn´t be missed. It´s cool to see King Woman supporting local bands!

Golden Dawn Arkestra Delivers the 'Disko' Funk

Psych-soul, avant-garde, and completely Austin, Golden Dawn Arkestra keeps up with the motto, “Keep Austin Weird.” Influences of Sun Ra are in their sound and appearance, as they dress in outrageous, larger-than-life costumes and play music that crashes like thunderous waves of sound. With new track 'Disko' from recent album Stargazer, Golden Dawn Arkestra captures their identity in a funk groove sure to shake some hips.

The band was formed by band leader, Topaz McGarrigle, also known as, Zapot Mgwana (who, interestingly, was told at a young age to be the son of Sun Ra), and they've taken on an identity of an out of this world band, one filled with a brass and horn section, provocative drums, a mesmerizing dance troupe and costumes of colorful regal robes that dazzle onlookers as much as their music does.

'Disko' in particular delivers GDA's distinct sound with fast paced funk, psych guitars, booming brass and a contagious groove. A gradual build up of horns leads into harrowing key playing, and the track is all the while kept moving with percussion that deliver fast punches. All of these elements of sound then mesh perfectly with the deep whispering vocals paired with the echoing funk that dares you to dance.

Golden Dawn Arkestra’s cosmic sound is something you don’t just listen to, it’s an experience, one that draws you in and doesn’t let go. Check out their song below and be sure to catch them this summer on June 18 at the Solstice Festival along with an incredible Austin-focused lineup!
