A Deli Premiere: The Sofas' “Keep Pass Turn Again” from “Chop Water” LP out on 9/14

Emerging out of NYC's psych and noise rock scene, The Sofas premiere their latest single “Keep Pass Turn Again” here today. While the track features an explosive wall of buzzing bees guitars and heavy snare drum, the vocal approach is softer and dreamier.  Lyrics “it is strong – but I feel it when you're not around” are delivered with the cool detachment of J. Mascis on early Dinosaur Jr. records. Sonic breaks between central vocal phrase “burning out” include momentary bursts of chaos along with a well-placed minor chord. “Is this not enough? Enough to keep you waiting?” ushers in a pitch-bendy change, aligning more closely with fellow gazey rockers like Ringo Deathstarr. Extending this segment until the track's end allows the blending of guitars and vocals to provide an ultimately uplifting warmth. The band's full album “Chop Water” was mixed by Bill Skibbe (Protomartyr, The Kills, Blonde Redhead) and will be released by Jurrasic Pop Records on 9/14. -Dave Cromwell

Siena Stone Releases Debut Single Freewheeler

It seems to be a truism that the artists hardest to pin down to a prescribed genre are the ones we work hardest to find a slot to add them to. New Zealand artist Siena Stone isn't making this job any easier. With a nod to lush summer jams (Beach House, Cocteau Twins), Stone delivers her latest single "Freewheeler" seemingly relaxed and carefree, but listen a bit more closely, and now you’re hearing a voice wrapped in mystery and intrigue, closer in spirit to evocative '60s/70s singer-songwriters like Warren Zevon and Richard Thompson (the song's title is itself a nod to early Dylan album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan). 'Freewheeler' appears soothing on the surface, but just as often gets lost under a flurry of reverb-soaked, synth-fueled waves, like you’re playing in the ocean, but perhaps have wandered a bit too far from the beach. Stone's work will live on long past the summer, and we're excited about whatever she'll be doing next. Check out 'Freewheeler' below. - Mike Levine (@goldnuggets)

New Nothing LP Available for Streaming & Announce Record Release Block Party

Ahead of its August 24 release date, Dance On The Blacktop (Relapse Records) the new album  from Nothing is available for streaming via NPR’s First Listen. The searing-soothing dichotomy the shoegazers channels the tug and pull between the hope that we can turn it around and the dreariness that we witnesses daily. One can brace for the bleakness of  the storm, and remember that the potential of positivity lies in its aftermath. On Saturday, August 25, a day of music, fun and food for all ages will be had , with a rad record release block party that will be taking place at the blocks of Livingston and E. Lehigh in Port Richmond. This serves as a precursor to Belly Of The Beats - a fundraiser for The Pennsylvania Prison Society, presented by WXPN and R5 Productions on Saturday, October 6 at Union Transfer, which also includes Swirlies, Big Bite, and Smut.

Parrot Dream celebrate LP release at Union Pool on 08.24

Parrot Dream’s debut album Light Goes is full of emotionally wrought dream-pop that unfolds in small yet powerful moments. The crystalline guitars and subtle synthesizers offer up shimmering tunes that balance sobering reality with fully realized dreamscapes. The equilibrium they’ve struck between these ideals comes through fully realized with songs like “Ode To Octavia”, where the group isn’t afraid to add a little grit to their sparkling sound. The band will celebrate the album release on August 24 with a show at Union Pool. –Tucker Pennington

New Inside Voices Demo EP Available for Streaming

An air of strange saturates in the new four-song demo from Inside Voices. Steered by the omnipresent push of percussion and the commander-control, dispensed vocals in a space-station setting, an over-arching intensity hangs in the atmosphere - one that lies dormant and then is realized in switch-flipping, musical reactions that tip the scales. It's a gradual swell of heaviness that asserts its stake on a shoegazing headspace.
