Human Ottoman is taking over

Human Ottoman is quite the trio.

Utilizing a couple instruments not usually employed by the typical makeup of a band, the amalgamation of Human Ottoman's vibraphone-cello-drum production caught our eye back in February of last year when we premiered their video for "YDKWH." Their vibrance even captured the attention of the bookers over at Treefort Music Fest, of which they played earlier this year and all of you voted as one of the best Portland acts there. 

As for what they've got going on currently, Human Ottoman were on the bands selected to be featured at tonight's Northwest Post-Rock Collective showcase. See their greatness, along with Volcanic Pinnacles, Long Hallways, A Collective Subconscious and Seattle's You May Die In The Desert, later today at the Tonic Lounge.





Jay Som Releases New Single - Turn the Other Cheek

San Francisco based artist, Jay Som has released a new single entitled, Turn the Other Cheek for "Our First 100 Days" campaign. You can catch Jay Som performing in San Francisco at the Phono Del Sol Festival on June 17th.

 

On Everybody Works, 22 year-old Melina Duterte solidifies her rep as a self-made force of sonic splendor and emotional might. This album - which Duterte wrote, recorded, played and produced entirely by herself, save a few backing vocals - was made in three furious, caffeinated weeks in her bedroom studio throughout October. Duterte even ditched most her demos, writing half the LP on the spot. If last year's aptly named Turn Into compilation showcased a fuzz-loving artist in flux, chronicling her mission to master bedroom recording, then Everybody Works is the LP equivalent of a mission accomplished.

With this record, Jay Som takes us places we never could have imagined, wedding lo-fi rock to hi-fi home orchestration, and weaving evocative autobiographical poetry into energetic punk, electrified folk, and dreamy alt-funk. Inspired by the complexity of Tame Impala, the simplicity of Yo La Tengo, the messiness of Pixies, and the pop sounds of Carly Rae Jepsen's E•MO•TION, Jay Som delivers 10 gorgeous tracks. Everybody Works features lushly composed pieces like "Lipstick Stains," shoegazey shredders like "1 Billion Dogs," sublimely spacious synth-pop beauties like "Remain," and luxe, proggy funk with "One More Time, Please."





Color Tongue play The Knit on May 4 + talk about gear on Delicious Audio

Color Tongue is a spacey, indie-psych rock band hailing from Brooklyn. Their latest release, Sprouts, is 8 tracks of inventive, sometimes atmospheric tracks, that while feeling expansive, ground itself with both its fun and infectious qualities. With such a myriad of different sounds coming from their latest record, we were curious to hear the band talk a little about their creative process, and of course, their gear, check out this interview on Delicious Audio. A Deli Premiere: PONCÉ's "Afterglow"

PONCÉ is a twin brother duo entirely unafraid to showcase an emotional intensity and sonic variety rarely reserved for indie rock. They harness dance rhythms and guitar/synth combinations in ways that remain largely unexplored in modern contexts. The songs sit comfortably within a pop orientation, freely crossing genre with harmony-driven melodies that bring both recent electro-rock favorites like Polica and Americana classics like Tom Petty to mind.

The twins’ debut effort serves as a bold, experimental work that showcases a variety of sonic influences while remaining true to the traditions from which the songs were born. Afterglow is a collection of tunes that work well in tandem, each one serving a functional purpose that situates the piece as a complete whole. The opening track “Surrender to the Night” harkens back to 80s style dance music, with tight, chorus-heavy guitar hooks and spacey synth pads, while other works like “Whoa Dakota” incorporate the alternative country/Americana tradition with breezy acoustic guitars and beds of rhodes organ.

This is a work that, aside from being impossible to ignore, situates PONCÉ as an outfit instrumental in Nashville’s indie rock scene. Pick up a copy of the album tomorrow and be sure not to miss twins’ next show at Little Harpeth Brewing on May 6th.

Damn Jackals celebrate EP release at Mercury tonight (04.28)

Jackals have the reputation for being sly, wild, and dangerous, so it's fitting that a Brooklyn-based noisy, garage-punk quintet would steal their name. With vocals that snarl, beats that kick and a delrious mashing of psych and punk aesthetics Damn Jackals deliver the type of garage rock that riles up crowds. On the band's latest video for new single "Stop N' Cop," singer/guitarists Beau Croxton croons his way through a surprisingly smooth melodic hook and growls through the verses with the blitzed-out filter of an am radio.
